What is the reason of increasing acidity of raw fresh water, despite its high percentage of salts (suspended and dissolved), in addition to its low organic matter? Can atmospheric CO2 causes this effect ?
@ Doaa, carbon dioxide is the major cause of acidity of raw fresh water. Because It can absorbs all most 30% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) that is released in the atmosphere. Human activity such as burning fossil fuels (e.g., car emissions) and changing land use (e.g., deforestation) are the major causes in increase in the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The other reasons of acidity may be natural ones, such as volcanism or oxidation at natural outcrops of pyrite deposits, or artificial ones, such as atmospheric deposition of acidity (acid rain) or pyrite oxidation caused by mining or agriculture.
