Thank you for this very good tangible example of LLM and AI used as a tool for corpus annotation of pragmatic and discourse phenomena, more specifically of apology speech acts. It shows the importance of prompting strategies.

This is an interesting thought: Are linguists cutting the branch they are sitting on? Could it be avoided? With the help of which linguistic theories?
One of the advantages of corpus linguistics has been that the source of every occurrence that it contains can be specified and thus the date and the register the occurrence belongs to. Will this be possible with LLM and AI and is it compatible with the researchers ethical responsability?
A few days ago, Philippe Monnoret (Paris Sorbonne) said in a lecture at École Rhénane des Sciences du langage that AI has no impact on theoretical linguistics as it is mainly based on statistics.
Thea Sommershield (see her page at Researchgate) shows how AI can be used to restore and date texts (inscriptions, etc.) in ancient languages as greek an latin. She also discusses de difficulties and challenges it implies. It could perhaps be said that is a useful tool in philology without changes what philology is.
