In certain crops such as wheat and rice, all individual plants might not come to anthesis at the same time (non-synchronous flowering). In such a situation, cross breeding becomes a problem. Thus, preserving pollen grains obtained from male donors for a long period offers the opportunity to breed all plants along a wider time period. Storage in an organic solvent as a means for preserving viability of pollen grains is well known, but I don’t know what works best for pollen grains from grass species. Can anyone suggest one.......?
