The notion of equality is a basic principle of human rights. By stating that there are a number of prerogatives inherent to the person, precisely it applies strict criteria of equality. Beyond the undeniable differences between humans -for physical traits, intellectual, social class, educational level, skin color, etc. the common quality to enjoy the equal basic rights as people. Such is the basic statement of modern formulation of human rights that can not withstand careful analysis.
The idea of equality offers various difficulties: its boundaries are not always precise, its definition is controversial and problematic inclusion. On the one hand, it is clear that there are multiple forms of social inequality-for race, ethnicity, disability, socioeconomic status, immigration status, age, etc. that are evident in finding that the principle of universality continues to impact on minorities. In addition, each of these groups called curiously vulnerable, are gender hierarchies.
In traditional societies there is a pecking order (things are as they are and no way to change them), the destination (so it has been and it always will be) or divine commands (it is the will of God). Everything has a place in a social and political order that is considered external to each person; the privileges of a few and the correlative subordination of others originate at birth and are immutable. The idea of equality is always related to justice. It recognizes the other as equal, ie, deserving the same treatment as each individual considers merit. Everyone is equally worthy than the others and therefore should have the same rights against the State. Human rights constitute an ideology whose liberating and emancipatory potential is promising precisely because of its universal lack. Human rights have been banner of social struggles in very different latitudes of the planet, have generated local, regional and international activism and have achieved widespread recognition both by society and by governments and international agencies.
Hello Marianne, several countries have achieved better integration and upholding of universal qualities including justice in their democracies. But in some other places, while they seem to describe the govt as a democracy, it actually works to keep certain persons in power. What I observe is that in these places, education and job opportunities are not given to those who deserve it, and they do not achieve the best success, because the deserving are not given the opportunities to serve the country.
I found an interesting link that you may like, dear Marianne.
