Hard to answer for your case. The quality of the data strongly differs regarding type, region/country and application of the data.

To my experience, road data has the highest quality because this was the original use of OSM. For some regions, building data, for example, is quite complete and of high quality, in other areas they are completely missing. I would say it is a good source if you have no other alternatives.

You can use the free OSM database. But for scientific purposes you can take BDOT from CODGIK for free. I think it will be better, more accurate.
