In most of my joint research the burden falls on me and my colleagues participate in a small amount. Nevertheless, I encourage them with the hope that one day these assistants will become the leaders and have a helpful team.

Generally, when my colleagues are at their lower spirit, I will explain them about the value of their participation and the value of the work what we are doing. In my opinion, once the people know the value, they will perform well with enthusiasm.

Rather than just guiding, when we start working physically with instruments, the research scholars automatically start working with me.

Without asking them to write when i myself star writing the paper, with results on my table, they feel shy and start searching the state of the art literature and start writing.

This has been experienced by me.

So it is very much necessary to do the research with hard efforts and good knowledge, only then one can guide the scholars by working with them.

I think you are talking about motivation of co-authors and co-researchers. "Motivation" is a very complicated term. Researches in the field of HRM have proved that motivation does not come from outside. It is purely internal. So, I do not try to motivate my co-authors and co-researchers.

When I see them lagging behind, I carry on with my responsibilities. Obviously, it becomes very difficult for them to lag behind when they see me working. Then they also start to work again. Leaders are those who do not force others to follow them. The so called "others" should follow them automatically. This is what has happened with me. I have been able to concentrate on my job and carry on even when my colleagues in some cases were lagging behind.

To sum up, I would recommend to carry on with the responsibilities for encouraging and activating the co-authors.

I try to share my strength and weakness with my co-authors before starting to write any research paper and my co-authors do also then we divide our parts based on our strengths and weakness and we suggest some strategies to each other to develop our paper.

I have a way, but very unpleasant for myself. I call this "recruiting associates." In order co-authors to work effectively, they should not feel that this is someone else's work (mine, for example). To do this, you need to underline the words all the time: "Ours", "We", etc. You need to listen carefully to the co-authors and immediately "grab" any of their suggestions, even if you don't really like it, and include these proposals in the research program. Gradually it can be "shifted" in the desired direction. Those, it is necessary to take the position of a comrade-in-arms, accomplice, co-employee, and not a boss, arbiter, customer, etc. Slave labor is the most ineffective.

Good question for anyone looking to collaborate with others.

In my experience, I tend to work with other people because I think they have knowledge or skills that would add to my own (or vice-versa). I usually tell them this, so they understand that the work just cannot be done without their input.

A discussion about this at the outset, describing what we will bring to the project and each contribute (by when) is helpful at setting mutual expectations and commitment.

Ideally, I like to informally test out the motivation and enthusiasm of potential collaborators. I tend to do this by sounding people out - speaking to them about the topic, their interests and their work before considering any talk of collaboration (or not, as the case may be).

As I say, this has been my approach to date and I haven't really had any problems with collaboration and co-authorship.

The most important thing is to identify co-researchers with good track record. This means that you do not just work with any researcher because this will be the beginning of the end.

Co-researchers who are irresponsible can cause you to miss deadlines and be blacklisted for grants. The time spent in verifying the reliability of your co-researcher/s is worth it.

If your co-researcher doesn’t do his/her work for no good reason, report problem snd ask to change

the co-researcher.
