What are the difficulties that a graduate student face in physics when writing a research paper for the first time?
The difficulty a graduate Physics student faces is that the lab work done was "fill-in-the-blanks" That required no creativity, merely following-the-steps-given. Now for the first time the student is expected to revive his / her creativity. But the student cannot write non-fiction, because this is Physics, so the student can only resort to doing. for example. a report on the history of science. Furthermore, the student has never read a Physics research paper, and so has no idea of what is expected. It is all an invitation to plagiarise.
Work in the lab without creativity? That is not about scientific work...
If supervisor give for the student only technical task then student will never growth to a researcher. Often supervisor do not respect a reading of articles by students, than it is no surprise that student could not write and have no creativity.
