Carbonfiber prepreg(epoxy resin included) and PMI structural foam are separated after they are combined. We want them to be compatible with each other, always sticking without separation. What could be the reason for this seperation and what we can do to improve their compatibility?
We commonly use wet layup epoxies and various foams including PMI (Rohacel) with out any problems. If the carbon prepreg laminate is delaminating from the foam too easily it might just be because the interface between the foam and the prepreg is dry. You probably need to add an extra adhesive film layer between the prepreg and the foam.
Unfortunately the description of your process and your sandwich/laminate is not sufficient enough to point at one specific reason. Reasons for a bad adheason in general could be:
- prepreg is already too dry (by means of too cured) for a good adhesion
- the temperature and/or time for co-curing is too low (bad diffusion so there is no semi-interpenetration network of PMI/EP)
- water/moist at surface e.g. caused by a "wrong" acclimating of the prepreg or ambient conditions
- contamination on the surfaces e.g. silicon oils, fat, dust, ...
- internal stresses caused by unsymmetrical laminates
To improve adhesion you should take into account/avoid the points above. Besides that you could also use a adhesive film like already mentioned.
