Many things probably slow down dementia. One of the most described is education, probably linked to the "cognitive reserve" (doi: 10.1016/S1474-4422(12)70191-6). As previously mentioned, all that protect the cardiovascular system also protect the brain: non-sedentary, physical exercise, etc., everything that is linked to a healthy lifestyle.
Unfortunately, stopping dementia, and specifically Alzheimer's disease, is far from being reach today. Most of the research focus on delaying by 10 to 20 years the onset of the disease. A cure for people how are already diagnosed with AD still seems impossible.

What about identifying the vascular pathomechanisms/predisposing factors which lead to the vascular changes individually ... instead of lumping them together in crude statistical cohorts?
