Apart from The above PDF,if go to Google and search what you want pleny of information is available. In addition wait for the release of our 5 volume book on Ethnobotany of India from Apple Academic Press.NJ
As suggest by the Prof. Bir Bahadur, you can get the information from the previous literature and further once you interact with the people and local heads regarding the availability of a particular plant and its application, then you raise many questions spontaneously. Thank you
Before asking the local people any question you should convince them that if they share their knowledge of the plants with you, then it not going to affect their profession by any means.
Kindly give them adequate respect and do not give them tips now and then.
Try to assess yourself whatever they are tell is justified or not.
While collecting information on economic uses try to know from them whether it is only for their personal needs or they have some market value. If they sell it, then how much money they can make.
While collecting information on medicinal uses you should ascertain which plant part they are using, mode of use, quantity of the medicine used at a time and duration of use.
Very first, you can find ethnobotanical data from herbarium specimens.
Secondly the information can be gathered from field surveys.
If you are taking surveys you must rember following points:
1- you must first target the "Headman" of the tribal for sharing his knowledge.
2-a medicine man can be of also very much important in providing information about medicinal and poisonous plants of the surroundings.
3- or you can target the people of older age among them. Young members in the tribe will be of little or no help to you.
4- obviously if you ask for medicinally important plant, then do not forget to inquire the plant part utilized for curing the disease and the mode of using that plant.
besides medicine, there are other uses of plant s among tribals, like for fruits, vegeables fibre etc.
The most important, you must take them in confidence so that feel secure for sharing their knowledge and convince them that in no way, sharing of information will hamper their needs and profession.
There are many foccus on ethnobotanical survey. Depending on what they are (utilitary, cultural, ecological and others), you can use different way to get them.
My experience with ethnobotanical data with herbarium specimens indicate there are very few samples with it, usually most of them contain only biological (habit, color, morphology, etc) and geographical (local of collection, altitude, longitude etc), and information about collectors, exponsor, name of project, herbarium, collection team, etc), but you can get some information using this methodology.
