I have a dataset including spectra collected with a handled NIR spectrometer (SCiO) over several months. I observe a baseline drift that is consistent with the evolution of the measurement date. My first hypothesis is that there would be an effect of the temperature over different seasons and possibly the light. My questions are:
- What can be the cause of baseline drift in NIR spectrometry?
- Can the temperature and light induce a baseline drift?
Both reasons you consider could contribute to a baseline level. Temperature always affect the baseline if CCD matrix in your spectrometer is not temperature stabilized. High sensitive IR spectrometers usually employ CCD cooler that can considerably decrease noise and stabilize baseline level. In this case dew point inside spectrometer shoul be controlled.
Excessive light inside spectrometer can affect the baseline level due to scattering when scattered light comes to CCD directly, not from dispersion element.
Depending on the task FTIR spectrometer (portable models are also available) could be better choice for IR measurements.
