Acetic anhydride is not available easily in our country. ISO method also saying to use the same. but is there any alternative chemical for this which can give accurate results and stability?
What country are you in? I didn't see that in your profile, and perhaps someone could point you to a source. Who set up your ISO method? That person should provide a deviation from your ISO-9001 procedure.
Acetyl chloride could work, but it is more reactive, and should be tested to validate your procedure.
Dear Mr. Jack, i am from India. To purchase Acetic Anhydride from authorised supplier, we need to complete the registration under Narcotics Dept. to get URN (unique registration number). And after that only we can purchase the same. currently we are going through this process. but till that,i would like to know the alternate solution.
Looks to me like there are many reasonable ways to make acetic anhydride, one of which I saw on youtube. It seems like a pretty silly idea to regulate acteic anhydride, but governments are pretty silly when it comes to science and technology. So few politicians can even pronounce chemical names or understand basic scientific principles, but they are enthusiastic about controlling everything.
Acetic anhydride used to be prepared in teaching labs, commonly using acetyl chloride and sodium acetate. The internet provides many references. There was old chemistry book (Vogel's practical chemistry lb guide) from more than 50 years ago which gave some procedures used in teaching labs.
I have tried octenyl succinic anhydride in place of acetic anhydride. I think dodecenyl succinic anhydride will also be effective. anything higher would have color issue with titrations.
I have the same issue, I am setting up a method for the testing of Ketonic Resin, to calculate Hydroxyl Value and in this method I want to use it for the Acetylation.
Would you mind to please suggest me any alternative.
