Offer extra challenges to the high performing students who are willing to help tutor the lower performing - then both groups benefit. Tutoring/mentoring in a field is the fastest way to consolidate learning and stimulate new ideas. Having to explain something to someone else makes sure you understand it yourself - it is never time wasted.
What can be done to keep engage high performing students while attending the low performing students in the class room?
Suggesting following 2 approaches:
Cover general need to know contents / knowledge, then split them into groups e.g. high & low performing student groups - provide some topics / assignment / questions to high performing group to discuss / brainstorm / answer on their own first whereas the teacher can focus more on the low performing group. Then the teacher can switch forth & back to facilitate both groups as best as s/he can.
Similar to above approach #1 but each groups include high & low performing students so that they can discuss / brainstorm / answer together in which group performance will be compared with other group - this approach might prompt high performing students to share / assist the low performing students in order to achieve the best group performance.
