MacDonald et al have evidence that daytime napping enhances visual working memory performance (Cohn Affect Behav Neurosci, 2018). What other types of memory performance are enhanced by daytime napping?
Daytime napping has been shown to enhance associative memory for letter pairs that are semantically unrelated. While it doesn't neccessarily improve memory of previously studied items compared to a baseline memory condition, performance is consistent with baseline conditions compared to controls who forget more letter pairs.
So napping prevents decay of memory. This is due to hippocampus consolidation that has previously been linked to the two-stage memory model. Namely, consolidation occurs initially in the hippocampus and then is stored in other regions for more long-term processing. During napping less information decays over time because it is consolidated through the hippocampus.
The researchers here have shown that more sleep spindles occur in the hippocampus for those who nap. They directly link this with the consolidation that takes place that improved associative memory for letter pairs.
