At least one semester has passed since the Covid-9 pandemia appeared worldwide. Many residency programs have stopped or reduced significantly their clinical and surgical training activities due to the known risks of exposure and contagion with SARS-CoV-2 virus. What has happened and what is going to happen to specialties medical education?

I’m quite heavily involved in anesthesiology training in Ireland. A basic core skill of any anaesthesia practitioner is to manually ventilate a patient in an emergency, be it a cardiac arrest or whatever else. It is - especially if done by a novice - an aerosol generating procedure. It is therefore impossible to teach to new trainees in the Covid environment. This will lead to individuals arriving at code blue or emergency scenarios, but unable to provide basic resuscitation. How we ever resume the teaching of bag-mask ventilation I cannot see.

The Virtual world cannot replace the real world at any cost. Though the medical residents can manage on e learning strategies, its the surgical residents who suffer most.
These are the residents who will do community service in another two years and whole surgical healthcare in future is in jeopardy.

Virtual patient technology can not replace real life interactions with patients but it does offer advantage in form of constructivist theory where arranging information can facilitate learning with added advantage of avoiding errors
