This article on the Humanities funding opens a gate in a major issue. I think that this downgrading on the humanities field is not only a UK thing but more of a European trend. Feedback from non European countries would be valuable too.

Here at the Polytechnic of Namibia we are 'transforming' to become NUST the Namibia University of Science & Technology. Hence there is a real drive for a 'scientification' of our courses, and indeed of our faculties.
Hence, we are now the School of Management Sciences. In addition, we are tasked to ensure that our courses offer more 'number crunching' and a more scientific approach to problem solving.
The UK scenario is not unique, and as higher education funding is under scrutiny around the world there is a belief that science will provide a better ROI return on investment for those governments which are looking to reduce their HE funding.
