There are few classifications for the communication systems. They can be classified according to the communication medium as wire line and wireless communication systems. In case of wires the signals are transmitted as electrical currents and in case of wireless type, the signal will be transmitted in form of electromagnetic waves.

The wireless communication systems are classified further to sub classes according to the frequency band used. These are the rf, the microwave and the optical communication systems. In case of microwave and optical systems the waves can be guided and transmitted across either metallic wave guides or insulator wave guides like the optical fibers.

The other type of classification is according to the signal nature. There are two basic types of signals, the analog signal and the binary digital signal.

Therefore there are two types of communication systems: the analog and digital communication systems. The physical form of the information signal is audio, video and data. The raw form of the audio and video is analog where data is in binary form. The modern communication systems are digital where all analog signals are converted to digital at the source and transformed back to analog at the destination. This is the meritorious advantages of the digital systems compared to their analog counterpart.

The digital systems have also drawbacks versus the analog. These drawbacks could be overcome by digital signal processing which are made feasible by the powerful computing devices and high speed data converters. In addition, not only the digital processors but also, the presence of the digital electronic memory revolutionized the digital communications.

I would like to defer from what has been said here so far!

It is too early to classify the communication systems as "analog or digital" or for that matter, "wired or wireless".

Let's start with a communication system itself - we can define it as a system that takes the" intelligent message" or piece of information from one point to the other.

Therefore it solely depends on the implementation as how we carry this message.

But if you are talking particularly about electronic communication system, I would prefer them to be classify them on the way this message or information flows as -

1) The simplex system: where the message originates from one point called sender and reaches to other point(s) called listener or receiver. This is one-way communication channel. The public address, radio broadcast are few examples.

2) Half duplex: In this type, both ends can send message from one end to the other or vice a versa but only one user at a time. These system may share the same channel or medium but only one user has right at a given time, I.e. it is time shared. But data or message can flow both ways. Walkie-talkie, ham radio, I2c, spi communication in ics are some examples.

3) The third is the Full-Duplex: Here, you have dedicated channels or medium to both users so that both ends can communicate or send messages simultaneously. In modern day, our mobile phones are classic examples of this type of system, off course the older telephones too!

Now the question comes, depending on the implementation, what method you use : wired or wireless, optical or RF or sound. Then the technology as how the messages are handled can further define types as analog or digital and so on.

It looks basic but I hope I have shed some light on the important aspect of a communication system. Hope that it answers your question.
