First, decide on an area of interest within these broad subject areas (e.g., for economics, micro vs macro, applied vs theoretical, positive vs normative, development economics, energy economics, etc). This, as noted by Christopher C Kelly, must be aligned with your future career goals (academia vs industry) and it is of critical importance since you would need to be sufficiently interested in that area to sustain your motivation levels several months down the line. Sometimes topic selection may also be driven by things like funding opportunities and availability of supervisory capacity at the institution where you are undertaking or intend to pursue your PhD. Accordingly, you could look at the topics that the funding bodies are currently supporting or ask your current/prospective supervisors what areas they are currently working on and/or are happy to supervise. Crafting your so-called "topic" would be a pointless exercise if you cannot get a supervisor at your (preferred) institution and/or you cannot secure funding for your studies, especially if you are not self-sponsored.

Second, explore the extant literature on the selected area(s) (see comments by Sarafa Agbogun and Adewumi Romoke Margaret). Most studies would highlight limitations (conceptual, theoretical, methodological, etc) and provide a scope for future work or areas needing further investigation. This would help you to identify the gap(s) in the literature.

Third, and as part of the second step above, visit the websites of leading journals/funders in the subject area and watch out for call for papers or call for projects. Such calls are usually centred on contemporary topics and issues (gaps) within the field. While your intention is not necessarily to respond/submit to the calls, you will have a good perspective on the current discourses in the area.

Fourth, frame your topic (tentative) towards addressing the identified gap(s) [which aligns with your career goals, matches your (prospective) supervisor(s) interest, holds the prospect for securing funding, etc]. This would be your working topic, which could be further refined as you gain more insight into what researching that topic would entail in terms of data requirements, analysis, etc.

Note that the above could be performed iteratively and so you need to give it time. The timeline may not be as definitive as the "two months" you indicated in your request.

Every individual has his/her interest areas, by critical review of literature of interest area you will find gaps for research/ problems need research. selection of topic should come from the scholar and it should be his area of interest. The scholar will have to go with the topic for two to three years. he/she will enjoy working on his area of interest otherwise feel boring.

With the acknowledged confusion of experts in monetary policy there's a lot of scope for research in that area.

As you're adding an economics degree to previous work in finance, you may be interested in studying the use of 10-year bond market yields in determining interest rates. Should this really be taken seriously as an indicator?

Perhaps this specific area is not of interest to you but there is enormous scope for questioning the foundations of monetary policy: central bankers are almost crying out for help!
