What are the triggers, parameters and their format, through which MAC orders RLC to initiate segmentation?

How is the process of Segmentation triggered in an RLC? In what format does the MAC inform the RLC about the PDU size in which an SDU is to be mapped? What other parameters affect the size of packed PDU?
