I have seen many article on supercapacitors claiming that leakage current obtained in nA range. Is it possible to get such ultra low leakage current in super capacitor. As per my knowledge leakage current always high for supercapacitor compared conventional capacitor due to the possible easy recombination of opposite charges occur at the double layer which are very close each other.
Is there any special care needed during assembling of capacitor to reduce the leakage current?
It is important to reduce the amount of the redox active impurities in the electrolyte, such as Fe(2+) and dissolved oxygen gas. It is impossible for direct recombination of the charges at the positive and negative electrodes which should have been separated by the electrolyte.
Thanks prof Chen. I understood that the charges in the opposite electrode cannot recombine. But the charge storage in EDLC are at the double layer which are in very close .Can opposite charges at the Double layer will recombine at higher working potential and contributing to the leakage current?.
Usually, the opposite charges at the same electrode should not recombine. However, what could help slowly reduce the charges are the redox active impurities in the electrode material(s) and/or electrolyte.
