Concrete is almost used in all civil engineering works right from residential to commercial buildings, roads, dams, tunnels, airport, etc are few to mention. Cement is the important constituent used in preparation of concrete. The main issue with the production of cement is the energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission which contradicts the sustainability concepts. There is a need to reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission during production of concrete. So what are the recent trends in concrete technology from sustainability point of view?

Improved cements with lower energy cost by using blended cements. A 25% replacement of cement by SCM's should mandatory, giving an immediate 25% reduction in greenhouse emissions.
A long forgotten option is to use larger aggregate sizes. If 30 mm maximum size aggregates are used, then the volume of fines can be significantly reduced.
Thank you Mr Gordon, I fully agree with your views. Wherever SCM's available in huge quantities as a result of industrial byproduct, government agencies must enforce stringent laws in using it as replacement of cement.
