The engineering design of sewage works depends on a lot of input data including the population to be served, the daily wastewater flow, the sewer system type, the temperature, and the pollution loads. Now, keeping in mind the potential impacts on sizing unit operations and associated CAPEX and OPEX, what adaptation measures and techniques should be applied to ensure sustainability of wastewater treatment plants and reclaimed water recycling for a given community, irrespective of its size? What possible risks prevail regarding production of biologically stable effluent? What operational and managerial aspects have to be considered and possibly adjusted at the sewage works?

Just for now - a very quick A: Hydraulic loads will change most, while the loads will stay more constant - so the concentrations will vary. Due to this one must search for solutions that allow this increase in flows and decrease in concentrations while assuring the planed operation efficiency. I will propose redesign of return flows to be in contact with raw wastewater (WW) for longer times (adsorption) and introduction of membranes into the basins to retain MLSS (activated sludge) and even allow working with higher concentrations of MLSS. All this will increase design capacity of the WWTP with minimal costs and minimal redesign, staying in the same footprint whivh may be the main imperative.
