My results show that the pre-ejection period (PEP) is significantly and negatively correlated with intima-media thickness (IMT) in hypertensive patients.
The number of samples is 70. PEP is the time period from the beginning of electrical stimulation of the ventricles to the opening of the aortic valve; IMT is a marker of atherosclerosis which can cause arterial stiffening.
I think this result is contrary to common sense. According to previous studies (the link below), arterial stiffening will lead to an increase of time required for systole and the reduction of diastole. That is, arterial stiffening should cause the increase of PEP.
So, what are the possible reasons for this result? Can you help me?
