Romil Dandan, Assessment of Mangroves and their multiple benefits to economy, society and environment has emerged key areas of research and action programmes, especially after the Asian Tsunami, 2004. The reason was that Mangroves have been found to be quite useful in containing the tsunami waves in the coastal areas where there were mangrove plantations. Now coming to your question, there are several methodological approaches being used by researchers worldover to assess the impacts of mangroves. One major approach is the Total Economic Valuation (TEV) approach proposed by Barbier (1994), which is a comprehensive approach to valuation of mangroves even from the ecosystem protection and sustainable development perspectives. You may start by mapping and assessing the physical growth of mangrove plantations in various environmental/ ecological conditions and then try to assess the multiple benefits to various stakeholders, who are the beneficiaries of mangrove plantations, especially, the local (village) communities. One important aspect to be considered in the assessment is to see the role of local communities and other stakeholders in the sustainable development and management of the mangrove resources. You may please read couple of my research work as follows, which would give you some idea on the existing research and assessment methods currently being used in the case of assessment of impacts of mangroves.
