There is every possibility that EC and chloride level of water is high , but yet the soluble sodium concentration is low , due to dominance calcium and magnesium salts over sodium salts...

I agree with the previous answers. The ions responsible for salination are: Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Cl−.

Usually a highly saline natural water body will also be alkaline. Now find out the ions that is responsible. Beside Na you may find high concentration of certain other metal ions like some of the alkaline earth metal ions.

It will be more prudent to discuss the salinity causing salts in arid versus humid regions. Salinity of cold deserts has different dimensions...
