Of course if you look at integrating stuff then IoT /IIoT/5G are promising too

I recommend:

-Edge Computing and dynamic task allocation and consolidation of results.

Assume a set of networked nodes with each three key functions/capabilities (data, network, compute)

Data means any data handling: fetch/get/retrieve/read, organise, write/store

Network means establish communication and transmit/receive data/results

Compute means processing, any computation as required

This is moving away from centralised feudal computing (star shaped topology around a single center) towards distributed computing.

In the next 50 years I expect ten cycles centralised - >distributed and distributed-> centralised

So your PhD should consider these likely alternating trends, and propose transitions between the two...
