in all the professional fields, Competency Based Education(CBE) is gaining momentum. When implemented effectively other methods of teaching like Self Directed Learning, Problem Based Learning and Technology based learning can be incorporated in CBE.
Teaching English to foreign language or second language will be the main core of concern. the implementation of Pedagogy and Andragogy will give great influence on the success of language learning output.
I would suggest an eclectic approach. Again, it would depend on context and situations. Some of the methods considered as progressive, such as the learner-centred ones, are proving tricky especially in cases where learners are increasingly becoming lazy. I've witnessed this in sub saharan Africa. Competency-based education, the most vouched for currently, may require a reasonable investment in terms of resources. Further, there are claims that it takes a rather narrow approach - as educators zero in on specific competencies - leaving little room for versatility and long life learning.
First of all define what is prominet theories and then what is modern teaching. There ae so many theories. Who decides which are prominent? Each learning environment is unique and so are the different theories. Yes, an eclectic approach may be the best to fit such unque environmet.
I suggest thinking of teaching as an interpretive process or practice. This approach provides focus and flexibility necessary for teaching students from different experiential backgrounds and with different needs. See:

Connectivism. This theory illustrates how Internet technologies have facilitated the educational climate with new opportunities for learners to learn and share information.
My understanding is that while teaching and learning are definitely related, they are not the same. Teaching addresses the appropriate identification and arrangement of learning experiences based on deep knowledge of specific learners, learning, and pedagogy. This requires a theory of practices to support learning, and social and emotional development. A theory of teaching encompasses theories of learning and much more.
Constructivism is the most underrated concept. Rapid and ever faster changes, which are a sign of our time, mean that each individual will witness greater changes in the next several years than previous generations have experienced throughout their lives. So we have to make a choice for ourselves, for our children, for our countries and for the planet: acquire the skills needed to participate intelligently in creating new things OR give up and live in addiction. The way out of the impasse is to introduce the principles of constructivism and computational thinking. Ahmed Hasan Mousa
