Focus on the big issues: water and earthquake resistance. Regarding water, the big issue is flooding, so elevation and storm water runoff must be at the top of your list. Regarding earthquake resistance, you will want to learn from traditional, local methods as well as from structural engineers. There may be a big gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it.
