Although I am quite active in the research domain of context-oriented programming technology, I am currently trying to expand my knowledge to cover the research field of context-aware databases or context-oriented database technology. What are the key research papers in this domain that I should not miss?

Additionally, in my view it is not the DB that is "context aware", because a DB is a storage mechanism. Per my approach, it would be some kind of an inference engine that would perform the context analysis, integrating heterogeneous data sources in order to formulate a plausible assumption about the required context. Such data integration cannot be fully automated with current technologies and knowledge. Look for "Data Integration Potentiometer in DERMIS" as a starting point to find out why.
Eli, your article from 2003 provides an interesting historical perspective on some of the technologies and applications that have lead to the new research area of context-aware and context-oriented computing. It also describes some interesting challenges that CO technology will need to face. The article's main goal is to propose a prediction of the time-frame of the future evolution of this area. I liked the initial examples of context-aware applications mentioned in the paper but the predicted time-frame seems a bit off now. Reading this article in 2015, the technology only seems to be reaching the point now where the technology was predicted to have been by 2010. This being said, of course the paper could provide only a rough estimate based on a rather naïve scale. It would be interesting to see what the prediction would give it would be recalculated today. It is true that the paper doesn't really provide me an answer regarding my question what research results have been achieved today in the fields of context-aware databases and context-oriented database technology, so I'll still have to delve into that a bit more.
