It looks like you are starting from scratch. The topic is so extensive that I would not know exactly where to start. I never thought of Environmental Education as a closed course, but rather imagine it as a continuing process of aquiring knowledge throughout one's life. So this is my sugestion: Call it "The future of our Planet" and by way of debates, discussions and literature searches provide inspiration to the students to continue acquiring knowledge and knowhow on where the Planet is today and where it is headed. There is no single reference to cover the topic. I would say, use general initiatives and then close in on local aspects. I am thinking of the World Summits on Sustainable Development, the meetings of the Convention of Parts (COP) to the Kiyoto protocol, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA). They all converge to our main challenge, namely to create a circular economy, which is the only means of survival. On the local scale, this would then lead to changes of thinking and behavior, as students realize that they are responsible parts of our seven billion community.

I am giving lectures about education for sustainable development at undergraduate level for seven years. During this time I realized that providing concrete examples improve students' awareness of environmental problems. For this reason I suggest using ecological footprint and carbon footprint calculators as a part of the course. You can find different kinds of calculators in the Internet. By calculating ecological footprints students will realize how daily life activities effect the environment. You can also conduct eco-school activities at your school to show the ways to decrease ecological footprint.

Dear Barboloa, I cannot agree more with Dr. Fehr, as the subjects are too many. However, the capacity to reflect about practical aspects of sustainability, I mean, daily life aspects, and how they connect then with scientific and lay knowledge, is the first competence I think that should be worked in (developed) in classes. I teach Environmental Management and Sustainability for undergraduate and graduate students since 2013. It is astonished that they seem to reproduce shallow conceptions of sustainability. But we shall remeber that it is quite complex. And I think this is because we, as teachers, fail to go deeper. In most of times, I hear students argue that this is about natual environment only, and many of them do not care, especially when registered in hard sciences courses. So, no matter the subject you start from, the transformative aspects, ethical issues, and value questions (in my opinion) should be always there for discussion.

I am not in the educational institute. But I may suggest you to give them lesson about the climate change impact on environment and environmental impact on climate change. It is really interesting. For example, dought can limit a forest growth and rainfall can promote forest growth though both of these are the impact of climate change.

I studied a Master of Environmental Management several years ago at the University of New South Wales - it used an interdisciplinary approach, with some fundamental knowledge courses (e.g. in tools and frameworks) and then elected topics that moved more into policy areas (e.g. international environmental policy and law), science areas (e.g. earth sciences) or economics (e.g. environmental economics) and social sciences (community participation etc.).  It might provide a useful approach for you to start from.

A holistic approach (interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary) will be more suited for this broad topic. Narrowing it down to practical examples around global warming, drought, extreme temperature, ecological footprint, .... will provide the students with a better understanding from the human ecological perspective. This could help change their perception and induce appropriate actions that are geared towards sustainable development.
