In many of the Indian coastal areas we find mangroves and there are many regulations made for its conservation. It has a good impact on flood control as it hold the sand and prevent it from flowing. Is there a method to quantify this holding capacity and show it impact in a spatial manner (like how much area will have its advantage at a micro level).

There are easy methods to examine sediment stabilities and densities in the area with mangroves, and compare them to sites without mangroves. Measurements and analysis is easy, but require high sample amounts to achieve significant results. Also comparison of water flow rates or water movement between areas can help!

Thank you for the question, it is interesting and general one. I think floods from rivers and tidal waves from sea. Mangrove forests are spreading around the estuarine regions ( not all estuarine regions) only. During the floods ( from rivers) water force may uprooted the plants which are present in the bank of the channels. if water force is minimum then they will be no damage to the plant populations. But in case of cyclones there is a chance for huge tides from sea, in these circumstance these plants act as coast guard to protect the near by villages or human habitations. In the year 1986, heavy floods were reported in the Godavari estuary which caused heavy loss of plant life as well as human life in the some parts of the estuary. Upto some extent mangrove populations may help to prevent the loss from the tidal waves.
