We engineers sometime busy in doing research in countless unpractical, non urgent, not beneficial to society like areas for increasing count of our research articles. But we know an engineer is a backbone of nation so he should be much responsive for the betterment of society. We should busy in finding solution for the problems our community, nation is facing.
I am looking these problems/needs of our society where we can develop an engineers land by working for motherland.

Hi - firstly, I completely disagree with your statement about engineers working in areas that are "unpractical, non urgent, not beneficial" - I would suggest that if you feel this way you should consider a career change to align what you do with what you feel is good or what has a positive affect on society. Most engineers I know can clearly identify how and where their work benefits quality of life and society as a whole.
Secondly, engineers can make immense contributions to quality of life and have a positive impact on society in areas such as Humanitarian Engineering, Water and Sanitation Engineering, and Rehabilitation and Biomedical Engineering, etc, to name a few. These aren't the only areas but are ones I am familiar with or have worked (or currently work) in. It's the application of the engineering that matters the most - where is it applied, and who does it help.
Inclusive cities. Where urban development takes into consideration diversity, dis/ability, gender, and other factors of its citizenship and invest to create safe and inclusive spaces.

I think a most valuable engineering would be to design an electric generator powered by ocean currents. I am not an engineer, but I foresee a design of electric generators on floating platforms in the ocean, either along coastlines or in the deep ocean. My idea is for a pole to go downward from the generator, with a metal flag at the bottom. As ocean currents flow past, the flag moves. Could this back and forth movement of the flag generate electricity? The big advantage is that, unlike solar and wind generators, ocean currents are moving continuously, 24 / 7. Perhaps there could be an electric battery on the platform, and after it is charged a passing ship could take the charged battery to use for its transport, and leave its used-up battery in its place. Then when the next ship comes by, it can take the newly charged battery and leave its own used battery. I hope you or others can develop this idea, to provide abundant clean energy.
