Could someone tell me (or link a suitable paper) what is are the functional groups present on the surface of graphitic carbon nitride?
I am aware of NH, NH2 and COO, but are there any other and which are the dominant ones?
Also, what determines the negative surface charge of graphitic carbon nitride?

The surface charge its determined by the formal charge in each group, given attention to pH. When you deprotonated your groups, your samples (functional groups) become points of eletrical charge concentrators (Lewis bases). The associated charge can be determined by zeta-potential measurements.
Dear Joshua, apparently functionalized graphitic carbon nitride is a promising material for a variety of practical applications.
