I am working on a system that needs to detect Road accidents to initiate its processing. i am trying to particularity monitor a human being instead of any vehicle in which he might be traveling. The system is designed in such a way that it can be helpful to even a pedestrian. I have already considered complete reversal of acceleration as a prime indicator and need other factors that i can use to increase the systems accuracy and reduce false alarm conditions. Since the system needs to be a vehicle independent so can't use the sensors used in, such as air bag systems etc..
may be you can consider vibration as another parameter. In static alternative machines, is a way to detect internal damages as Crankshaft break. It could be some kind of piezoelectric transductor. Good luck!

It depends on what it is that is having the accident.
Breaking glass? Acoustic detection.
Broken water pipe? Presence of water in the vicinity.
Broken communication cable? Drop in signal.
etc.
If you can tell us the context, we'll be able to deliver better answers.
Depending on severity of the accident that you are trying to detect,
You could detect sudden changes in ambient noise, maybe an angle of the vehicle. If you can place sensors on the perimeter, then pressure sensing can help.

Depending on your power budget and scope of complexity, one might even want to consider a diffuse Ka band radar Doppler unit. Or a Lidar.
Hokuyo makes a nice range of devices, that operate out to a dozen metres or so. Then one simply (!) identified returns that, at a given angle, display an ever-shrinking radial distance. Of course, a thrown paper dart would yield a 'flag' just as much as a moving car.
But that's to *prevent* or at least, identify an impending accident.
Actually detecting an accident, then 'yes' accelerometry and general acoustic sensing are reasonable methods. Most accidents are not silent - and if they're energetic enough then things will break, people will exclaim (scream!) and so on.
One might also look at angular acceleration using MEMS gyroscopes - accidents rarely generate pure linear acceleration.
