What are the factors of global competitiveness of the national agro-industry? Is there a model or models by which it can be determine and compare the competitiveness of this particular industry? I'm looking for literature references which specifically refer to this model or models.

My current research project is focused on farm machinery in North America. It is within, this segment of the Agro-industry that I have identified a new set of participants striving to drive NPD / Innovation up/down the value chain.
That being said, I would also be interested in any models that compare / contrast the competitiveness of the 'machinery sector' of the agro-industry. However, I suspect that there is little to no literature references available exploring this in detail because Precision Agriculture is in such an early stage of adoption.

It seems to me that there must be a connection between the employed labor, the total capacity and the degree of mechanization on the one hand (the influencing factors on productivity) and foreign trade relations (import-export) on the other.

I suppose that it is the sector case (national agro-industry) where factors of global competitiveness can not be applied adequately. Vice versa, the regional specifics of national economy structure determine differences in weighed significance of standard factors of global competitiveness so as they influence the differences in economic and social infrastructure etc. Regressional analysis would help to select the main factors determining the global competitiveness factors in comparable agro-industry sectors of different countries or to compare impact of innovation factors in different economy sectors.
