The spin orbit coupling of the element is directly to proportional to the atomic number. Hence, the heavier atom will have high spin orbit coupling. How do measure the spin orbit coupling of the material?

In the case of 4d or 5d transition metal oxides (Sr2IrO4, Sr3Ir2O7 etc), the X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy can be used to extract the information abot the spin orbit coupling strength. The intensity ratio of white lines of Ir L3 and Ir L2 absorption edges (branching ratio) is correlated to the spin-orbit coupling operator .

To my knowledge, spin orbit coupling constants were the results of quantum chemical calculations as in the seminal paper by Schaeffer et al. (see attached). But now experiment seems to come into play.
Dear Sorb, can you please provide us more information about spin orbit coupling parameters from XAS data. What means "extract" and "correlate"? Do you simulate your data using quantum chemical approaches, thus fitting the spin orbit coupling constants?
