What are the existing methods for nonlinear, non-sinusoidal, and non-periodic load current compensation? what are the existing challenges? Is there any verified method for the compensation of a large harmonic generating load (such as arc furnace)?
It would be really appreciated if some papers or dissertations are provided.
1) Series connected, parallel tuned passive filters that blocks flow of harmonic currents
2) Shunt connected, series tuned passive filters that bypass them
3) Combination passive filters using both series and shunt filters
4) Active Power Filters using PWM IGBT converters which compensate harmonics
5) Hybrid filters using a combination of passive and Active filters

I would suggest to track the publictions of Volker Staudt (Germany), Alexander Emanuel (USA), Paolo Tenti (Italy), Mauricio Aredes (Brazil) and Leszek Czarnecki (USA). They are the most acknowledged researchers on Electric Power Theories and work in compensation issues (measurement, decomposition, analysis, compensation, etc.).
