I am preparing a suspension for luminescence studies and am having a difficult time keeping my material from crashing out. I have tried various mixing methods but have not changed the solvent I am using (hexanes).
Viscosity affects aggregation kinetics.
Solvent density affects sedimentation rate.
More specifically, the aggregation kinetics are determined by:
Particle concentration
Temperature
Particle size
Liquid viscosity
Sedimentation rate is determined by:
Density difference between liquid and solid
Effective particle size (accounts for porosity/fluffiness of aggregate)
You state you have micron-sized particles. This large size and the lower density/viscosity of hexane will certainly yield fast aggregation/separation.
Can you agitate your sample such as with a magnetic stirrer bar?
John Francis Miller, I believe some kind of mixing solution could be arranged but the spectrometer I am using doesn't have a platform with a magnetic stirrer. I am going to try dispersing my material in DMSO or chloroform. Thank you for the insight.
