what do you mean by 'characterization' technique?

In case of photon energy distribution please use any energy resolving x-ray detector such as a high purity Germanium detector. Here total photon flux as well as energy distribution can be measured.

When using 1D or 2D detector arrays you will get the lateral distribution as well.
