When solving optimization problems (for example, mixed-integer programming problems), IBM CPLEX and lingo can be regarded as common solvers. So what are the differences between them?
I know they have different programming languages and syntax formats. What else are there?
They are both scientific solvers, however, Lingo solves more types of problems than CPLEX (for example, non-convex and quadratic problems). Therefore, I think you should choose the solver according to the type of the problem you are dealing with.

If you are beginner you can start with the Lingo demo version, however it is limited by the number of variables and constraints. In other way the use of IBM CPLEX must impose means in this area.

The Cplex can solve problems of classes like LP, QP (both convex and non-convex), SOCP (second-order conic programming), MIP, MIQP, MIQCP (both convex and non-convex). The Lingo, as far as its syntax admits, can solve all types of problems; however, the Cplex is technically more efficient than the Lingo in handling certain classes.
Lingo is better for beginner, it can solve more problem than CPLEX, While CPLEX is more powerful in the resolution of big size problem and in the notion of time also.
