I think information and data preservation is a hot topic right now, mostly related -but not necessarily- to digital repositories (see OAIS norm, aka ISO 14721)
Most of research areas in MIS are empirical. They concern with evaluation of existing IS, ERP adoption, SOA adoption, SOA Maturity Models. In Oman, the integration and the interoperability of the legacy systems is of paramount importance, where Web services and SOA play critical roles
Another area that could be very interesting is the alignment between Management and Information Systems. Considering that management is a business area and information systems a more technological area. This leads to the alignment of the MIS to the business needs as another research area, that helps also the clarification of what the MIS should do too.
Other "hot" areas right now are: business analytics/data analytics/business intelligence, IT in health care, and consumerization of IT. The business analytics area is super hot given the number of schools that are looking to fill spots in their faculty with people who have those skills.
Keynote Speaker, Prof. Dr. Seddon in recent conference I attend talking about Social Informatics. You can explore this field deeper if you are interested in this research topic.
