Could I know what are the current field practices followed around the world especially in India in selecting the asphalt modifier and its content to change the viscosity grade or PG upper-grade temperatures of asphalt?
1- The first issue in the selection of asphalt modifiers depends mainly on the property that the modifier is intended to improve (viscosity, cohesion, stripping, stiffness, ..etc) since some modifiers can improve one or more property but with negative impact on other properties.
2- The second issue in selecting the modifiers is the selection of method of mixing the modifier with asphalt cement (cold, hot, warm, mixing time) for a target viscosity.
3- The third issue is whether it is premixed or mixing in site.
Based on that the selection of the proper modifier is conducted.
It completely depends on the properties that we need. For example, for raveling, anti-stripping agent may work and for increasing the rutting resistance, elastomers may work. However, I believe that SBS, Crumb rubber and Sassobit, are among the top popular additives around the world.
It depends mainly on the type of distresses in India. In addition, it is very important to select the suitable asphalt modifier . There are two types of asphalt modifiers; elastomers and plastomers; you have to study the chemical composition of different modifiers then compare between them to determine how will these asphalt modifiers react with the asphalt binder. Then, you have to perform a laboratory performance testing for both modified and unmodified asphalt binders to determine the PG and which one is the most suitable in your case. I suggest to do such testing according to the type of distress for asphalt mixture too. in addition to th previous recommended asphalt modifiers, a new good modifier you can try with is Elvaloy
