Writing a good case study is very important especially while doing qualitative research. What criteria should be applied and what are the points that are to be kept in mind while writing a good "case study"?
Whole books have been written about this topic. I recommend the textbook by Stake for single case studies, as well as Yin's text (which is especially good for comparative case studies).
1. To understand case-study design, you need to understand other qualitative research designs, like narrative, phenomenology etc., as well. This will give you an overall and comparative understanding of the available research designs in qualitative research. You may start with:
Creswell, John W. (2013). Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches (3rd Ed.). Thousand Oaks, California: SAGE Publications.
2. You may then study books that are specifically written on case-study research. Yin's book may be helpful.
Yin, R. K. (2009). Case study research: Design and methods (4th ed.) Washington DC: Sage Publications.
3. For the start, a case-study design needs to fulfill two conditions: one, the problem/phenomenon you are researching is complex; and two, multiple sources of data are available to study the problem/phenomenon.
A case study is a comprehensive study of a social unit of society, which may be a person, family group, institution, community or event. A case study focuses attention on a single unit thoroughly. The aim is that to find out the influencing factors of a social unit and the relationship between these factors with a social unit. Some characteristics ofstudy;
A good case study must not seek to generalise but explicate. The methodology of case study resides in illumination. It throws light onto complexity. Then, questions arise that provoke studies of other phenomena. Note, case study juxtaposes against the hypothetico-deductive (H-D) approach. We resort to case study when H-D is impotent. Cf.
