What are the considerations while approximating a positively charged sphere as a point particle?

We have a hypothetical sphere with a volumetric positive charge density (ρ). This sphere has a single electron on its surface. Can the positively charged sphere be emulated by a point particle sphere with the same amount of total charge for electrostatic force calculations or the above emulation would be valid only when the electron was far away from the sphere and not on the surface of it?
