By 2015, the world will have 25 billion smart thermostats, fitness bands, and other Internet-connected, data-spewing devices, according to the Federal Trade Commission.On Tuesday, that agency’s chairwoman, Edith Ramirez, devoted her CES 2015 keynote to warnings about the privacy and security risks of the so-called Internet of Things, or IoT.
The European Commission has recently initiated public consultation on the so-called Internet of Things. Scheduled to be completed this summer, the consultation is a step toward potential regulation.
And while some say the Internet of Things is just around the corner, others think it is already here. That's why concerns such as privacy, security and who has access to data collected by governments and companies should be at the top of the agenda, they say.

Practical applications of this Internet of Things (“IOT”) are already giving us useful new services: we can monitor our home from a distance and interact with its automated systems, by remotely activating our heating, lawn mowers or sprinkler systems.
