Adenoid is a part of lymphoid tissue located in specific area called nasopharynx ( part of phayngeal tube at the back of nose ). It is normal findings for all human beings and may be found in other mammals .The lymphoid has so many physiological functions in human bodies mostly related to immunity either local or systemic. In some children the adenoid tissue is causing problems related to the upper respiratory tract as ear problems , snoring , nasal obstructions . Medical treatment can be tried first to treat the problem and control the adenoid effect . In case of failure of medical treatment ( as guide lines states) surgery is the only solution up to nowadays .
Adenoids may result in obstructive or inflammatory complications, either localized or regional (e.g. ear troubles); in this situation surgery is indicated.
Another helpful adenoids grading system was suggested, more than 10 years ago, where grades 1-2, are treated conservatively in most cases; while in higher grades (3-4) surgery might be indicated.

I think your question is concerned about your relative however surgery is safe and it is commonly done in children before age of 8 years
Adenoids, rightly mentioned as 'pharyngeal tonsil or nasopharyngeal tonsil' in wikipedia not only problem for children, one of my aunts used to suffer with this. Interestingly though she underwent operation regrowth occurred she used to suffer with that once in a while. Seems this regrowth occur in certain cases.

As you are working in genes and genome can you find us a relative causes of recurrent adenoid in children
It is suggested before as incomplete removal of it is the cause but it is not clear direct cause untill now
Tonsils and adenoids are part of our lymphatic system, their duty is to filter bacteria/protect from bacterial infection. Unfortunately if they are infected then the problem starts. I believe the infections and tolerance depends on person's immunity. If immune system is perfect then it is fine otherwise we have to face problems. As per my knowledge 'No specific genes are reported'. I believe tumor suppressor genes/transcription factors may play role in this.

Simple assessment of adenoid size, amount obstruction to choanae, presence of adenoid facies. I have done adenoidectomy in babies 4 months old.
