Continuing education, networking, community-service, ongoing research, management and leadership learning are all effective and helpful strategies for professional development.
Volunteer to assist a fellow colleague who has an objective of getting a manuscript published or mentor someone who is just starting to do a research paper for the first time.
The best strategy is not to have any strategy. Instead, you must always be open for new ideas by means of which you will reexamine your knowledge continuously.
I agree with the two "popular replies". Would like to add a point in the strategy: one should keep own-self far away from so called megalomania. Indeed, it is one powerful hindrances to professional development. Let's stay hungry, stay foolish.

Vocational training is not professional development. The two concerned are different.
Vocational training can be in the workplace, university or both.
It can be remotely. Individually or with group etc.
