Tribology has many applications in mechanical systems, especially for machinery components and parts. However, there is a wide range of applications in other areas that are also very important and interesting.
I'm looking for good papers with some discussion about tribology and presenting these modern applications. Please, leave a comment about the cited papers.

Tribology has a lot of applications, because the study of wear, friction and lubrication involves many kinds of knowledge, like Physics, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamic studies etc. Also, it impacts all the society as well the World, some examples are the Tribology influencing the Economy, as related in Jost Report, Society, Nature etc.
One of the applications of this science is the Green Tribology, the area in Tribology which has a focus on environment, because it deals with interacting surfaces in relative motion and takes into consideration energy and environmental sustainability.
There is an interesting publication that explains the Green Tribology very well and a research involving Green Tribology.

We do not usually acknowledge how often tribology is present in our lives, as an exemple, modern medicine has a close relationship with tribology. The body's movement causes friction so the body evolved to produce a natural lubricant in its joints. This would be a problem for joint replacements since it doesnt have this natural lubricant. Tribology is present in every thing we do. Eating, walking, and even sleeping. In gastronomy researchs are made in a way to increase the pleasure of eating and drinking. We feel the flavours when our tongue touches the food, and the interaction between surfaces is a main topic of tribology. The researches want to discover ways to make it more pleasent, as it's related to the texture of the food or the drink and how we eat.

I found a really interesting article correlating tribology and wine astringency, and another one about 3D computational simulation/optimization of biomedical tribology.
I think thay are great examples of tribology`s application rather than machinery componentes.
