I am interested both in how students, teachers, and citizens have used social media for or against democracy with an eye towards how social media can be used towards the ends of democratic citizenship. While practitioner examples and empirical studies are preferred, popular media stories will be useful also. Thanks!

This is not a very academic answer but you should check out an episode of the sitcom Community entitled "App Developments and Condiments".
The episode has two students beta test a social media platform that allows ranking of people (MeowMeowBeanz) in the community college. The app quickly changes harmless fun into a hierarchical, classist society.
It's an exaggeration of exactly what you're looking for!
