For designing an array of microstrip patch antennas you can follow these steps.
1. First of all design a single patch element resonating in the required frequency band of interest.
2. Then choose the feed type, either corporate feed or power divider/splitters can be used. (Do the literature studies to get the idea about the network feed types and mictostrip antenna arrays).
3. Then you can design 2-patch antenna array with the spacing of 1/2 wavelength using the appropriate feeding technique.
4. Later you can simulate and see the results for 4-path or 8-patch array accordingly.
1) design the single antenna/element. Study the performance. Optimize the simulation until obtain roughly what u want
2) with the use of feeding network, and proper impedance matching, use that single antenna and construct an array. Optimize untill you get the result u want, gain, radiation, etc
You are welcome. Well you can see the description about array feeding techniques in the following video:

However in order to fully understand the working and analyze the results you have to find research papers from IEEE Explore or from any other recognized journals.
